Abstract:

Objective
The objective of the CARE4CARE project is to investigate in a comparative and multidisciplinary perspective the working conditions of care workers and their perception of their working environment in six EU Member States (France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden). Thus, to develop suitable tools to improve job quality and counteract discrimination in the sector.
The project has been awarded a Horizon Europe grant for a three-year lifespan to study the risks and conditions of the vulnerability of care workers, to raise awareness and rights consciousness among them and their trade unions and to support the elaboration of legislative and policy proposals at national and European level.

Target

The target of the project are the care workers employed in the public and private sector – in both formal and informal economies – such as nurses, healthcare assistants, elderly and/or childcare workers and care workers who assist people with disability.

Consortium

Coordinated by an experienced team of the Department of legal sciences of the University of Florence DSG-UNIFI (Italy), the CARE4CARE Consortium involves other 9 European partners:

  • Lunds Universitet (Sweden)
  • Universidad de Girona (Spain)
  • Universidad de Sevilla (Spain)
  • Europa – Universität Viadrina (Germany)
  • Uniwersytet Rzeszowski (Poland)
  • Tuscan Organisation of Universities and Research 4 Europe (Belgium)
  • Université de Bordeaux – Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (France)
  • European Federation for Family Employment & Home Care (Belgium)
  • European Federation for Services to Individuals (Belgium).

The Consortium can rely on the support of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI).

Outputs of the overall research

The research outputs of CARE4CARE project are:

● to develop, through a comparative socio-legal analysis, a comparative investigation of working conditions and patterns of discrimination in the care sector in the countries concerned, to highlight strengths and weaknesses with respect to social inclusion and working conditions;

● to assess – adopting a psycho-social perspective – the care workers’ direct perception of working conditions and well-being at work, as well as their rights’ awareness.

The societal outputs of the CARE4CARE project are:

● to create a model of analysis and regulation of the care sector that can be replicated in other European countries and can bring out new relevant strategies for intervention for European institutions;

● to design and deliver training programs to empower trade unions, employers and families associations’ representatives with knowledge and skills on effective strategies to recognize vulnerabilities of care workers, improve job quality and assess discrimination in the care sector;

● to develop a web platform providing accessible information on working conditions for care workers in the countries concerned.
